The National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, has commended the NUJ Kano State Council for its innovations, inclusive leadership, and consistent programmes that unite and advance members of the union.
Comrade Yahaya made the commendation during a dinner and award night to mark the closing ceremony of the 2025 NUJ Press Week organised by the Kano State Council, held on Saturday at the Press Centre, Kano. He described the Kano Council as one of the councils he is “always proud of,” applauding leaders at all levels for their commitment and teamwork.
The NUJ President also expressed appreciation to Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his passion and substantial investment in the journalism profession. According to him, the governor’s support has significantly strengthened media practice in the state.
Urging journalists to embrace professionalism and responsibility ahead of 2026, Comrade Yahaya called on members to become strong ambassadors of the profession by setting the right agenda and protecting the image of journalism in Nigeria.
He further revealed that the NUJ national leadership is pursuing new innovations, including improved remuneration for journalists working in federal media organisations. He said discussions are ongoing with the Minister of Information, expressing optimism that once implemented at the federal level, the union would advocate for adoption across the 36 states.
Comrade Yahaya also announced plans by the union to introduce a health insurance scheme for journalists, aimed at reducing out-of-pocket expenses, lowering maternal mortality, and supporting the drive toward universal health coverage.
In his remarks, the Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, reaffirmed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s commitment to journalists’ welfare and professional development. He highlighted reforms introduced by the ministry, including capacity-building programmes, a state media information policy, inclusion of online media practitioners, and the establishment of a veterans’ league to support retired journalists and mentor younger ones
On his part, Chairman Kano online media Chapel Comrade Abubakar Abdulkadir Dangambo expressed gratitude to Kano government, NUJ national president and chairman Kano council of the NUJ for the roles they played in the formation and recognition of the new chapel.
Dangambo assured the National president, the chapel and its members will continue to work according to the ethics of journalism and protect the integrity of the Nigeria Union of journalists.
